The Castle Lager Surrey Championship (5th May)

The Surrey Championship has a major new sponsor this year after securing a deal with South African Breweries under their brand name of Castle Lager.

On the first day of the season 4 of the 5 scheduled Premier League matches were played and there were opening day victories for Sunbury and Banstead. Sunbury beat Banstead by 4 wickets with Van Drau taking 6 for 47. malden Wanderers lost to Sunbury despite 55 from Bond, Hewitt took an impressive 6 for 11 for Sunbury.

The score of the day had to be Esher’s 291-2 declared, with Robinson 134 and Sadiq 130, but it was not enough to secure victory over Guildford who finished on 140-5.

The Fullers Surrey County League (5th May)

In Division 1 of the Surrey County League Byfleet started the season with a win over Roehampton by 28 runs with Roehampton collapsing to 134 all out after an impressive start. Godalming 113-1 beat Haslemere 112 by 9 wickets. The closest match was at Horley where the visitors Marlborough (1870) were bowled out for just 104 but then pulled off a remarkable 4 run victory. Newly promoted Whiteley Village hung on for a draw at 93-8 replying to Leatherhead’s 145-9 and Churt frustrated Old Pauline finishing on 146-8 chasing Old Pauline’s 193-6. Carshlton & Croydon Gas made 194-8 in 54 overs but were unable to bowl out Woodmansterne who scored 127-7 in 43 overs.

Three matches were called off because of the weather.

In Division 2 Valley End and Wallington both had winning starts. Valley End beat Chobham by 70 runs and Wallington won by 6 wickets after bowling Merrow out for just 84.
